2011年11月4日，应工程塑料国家工程研究中心邀请，法国国家科学研究院植物大分子研究中心（CERMAV－CNRS）西山義春(Nishiyama Yoshiharu)研究员来理化所进行学术访问，并作了题为What the crystal structures tell us about molecular interactions of polysaccharides的学术报告。

报告中，西山義春研究员从晶体结构研究方法的发展历史着手，介绍了纤维素结构的各种模型，并通过对这些模型的比较介绍能从中得到的信息。报告分为五部分：1. Multiple approaches for structure analysis. 2. What do we learn from the structure. 3. What are the origins of discrepancies. 4. Where does the parameters come from. 5. Diffraction from nonperiodicmodels of cellulose crystals.

西山義春研究员2000年获东京大学博士学位并留校任教，2004年始任法国国家科学研究院植物大分子研究中心研究员。他关于纤维素结构方面的研究工作颇具原创性，文章被多次引用。
